The Storage Mistake To Blame For Your Spoiled Lettuce
One common storage mistake that can lead to spoiled lettuce is not properly drying the leaves after washing them. When moisture is trapped on the surface of lettuce leaves, it can promote the growth of bacteria and mold, leading to faster spoilage.
After washing lettuce, it's important to thoroughly dry the leaves before storing them in the refrigerator. Here's how to do it:
Gently shake: After rinsing the lettuce under cold water, gently shake the excess water off the leaves.
Use a salad spinner: Place the lettuce leaves in a salad spinner and spin them until most of the water is removed. If you don't have a salad spinner, you can pat the leaves dry with a clean kitchen towel.
Air dry: Alternatively, you can lay the lettuce leaves out on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels in a single layer and allow them to air dry for a few minutes.
Once the lettuce leaves are dry, transfer them to a clean, dry container or resealable plastic bag lined with paper towels. Store the lettuce in the vegetable crisper drawer of your refrigerator, where it will stay fresh for longer.
By properly drying lettuce leaves before storing them, you can help prevent spoilage and extend the shelf life of your greens.
